The Bowen Technique

The Bowen Technique is a remedial therapy which works on a musculo-skeletal level to encourage healing and relaxation and improve blood flow and the supply of nutrients to the body's tissues. The muscles rebalance their levels of micro tension, allowing realignment of the body. On an emotional level Bowen helps to relieve stress and trauma and has a calming effect on the nervous system.

It has been beneficial for:

  • repetitive strain injury (rsi)
  • back pain
  • frozen shoulder
  • tendon and ligament injuries
  • whiplash
  • temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) problems
  • trapped nerves and sciatica
  • fibromyalgia
  • general muscle tension
  • constipation
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • migraines
  • endometriosis
  • menstrual problems
  • menopause
  • mastitis
  • respiratory problems
  • In pregnancy for lower back pain, release of pelvic ligaments & muscles to increase pelvic mobility
  • After birth Bowen helps realign the pelvis and speed the recovery process

History

The technique is named after Tom Bowen (1916-1982), the Australian who developed it. Tom described his work as moving blocked energy, and many Bowen moves correlate with acupuncture points

Treatment

The technique involves taking the skin slack across the muscle, and moving over it with a firm but not painful pressure. The moves are interspersed with periods of rest that enable the body to absorb, address and target a specific area of concern. Visual assessment of the body and tissue tension is used to guide the treatment. All moves are done through light clothing

1 hour sessions for adults
30 minutes for children under 12 years
